Family Movie Nights Offer Opportunity for Community, Social-Emotional Learning

June 27, 2022

First 5 Humboldt has already sponsored two free Family Movie Nights in partnership with the Arcata Playhouse in their Circus Tent in Arcata. It made a great venue for families to bring young children to see a movie! They could still be socially distant and partially outside, with room to move around. Snack boxes of finger foods were available to children, put together by the amazing caterers at the Jefferson Community Center kitchen.

We provided a short discussion sheet that highlighted the themes of each movie, with talking points for extending the conversation with young children. In May the movie was Inside Out, and functioned as the family activity part of First 5 Humboldt’s Spring Symposium, Counting on Community. June saw a huge turnout of about 50 children and their families who engaged in a singalong (and dance party) to the movie Encanto.

The July movie will be Luca, a humorous tale about perseverance and identity that is sure to have both children and adults laughing. It is scheduled for Thursday, July 7 at 6:00 (the movie starts at 6:15). Snack boxes for children are available (free) on a first-come, first-served basis.
