It’s been a lively fall season for First 5 Humboldt playgroups! From August through October, families across the county have come together to connect, play, and learn in supportive, joyful environments.
First 5 Humboldt is continuing to pursue a partnership with Redwood Coast Regional Center (RCRC) through vendorization. In preparation for this partnership, First 5 Humboldt staff facilitated a training with RCRC staff in early October focused on bilingual family support navigation, cultural responsiveness, and the other types of family support offered in our playgroups. Also in anticipation of this partnership, processes for playgroup annual registration and daily sign-in were transitioned to an electronic system that will help streamline data collection for all playgroup staff, as well as help collect more reliable and consistent data to better share the story about what playgroup contributes to our community. A finalized contract is anticipated soon, which will strengthen collaboration and expand access for families.
Most playgroups are now back up and running after summer pauses, with strong attendance and enthusiastic engagement from families. We’ve especially loved seeing new families join this fall and longtime participants return to reconnect with friends and facilitators. Loleta Playgroup is currently closed, but preparing to reopen once the RCRC contract is complete. Meanwhile, all other playgroup locations are open and offering creative, play-based experiences rooted in early childhood development and connection.
Playgroup leaders will also come together in November for our biannual playgroup retreat—a time to share ideas, reflect on their work, and strengthen our community of practice. Leaders continue to bring warmth, creativity, and intention to their groups—helping ensure that every family feels a sense of belonging and support. This Fall retreat will feature a workshop around the power of play in young children and the vital role it plays in early childhood development.
As we get closer to this exciting new partnership and transition into a new phase of First 5 Humboldt playgroups, we look forward to more play, shared snacks, and opportunities for parents and caregivers to connect. Thank you to all the families and leaders who make our playgroups such a vital and joyful part of the community!
