We are pleased to announce that the First 5 Playgroup in Loleta will be a Spanish-only space where children can learn and play in an all-Spanish-language environment.
After many conversations the leaders had with the Spanish-speaking parents of the Loleta Playgroup, the playgroup leaders understood the need to create a playgroup that would meet the needs of the Latino community in Humboldt County. With the goal of preserving the language through songs and games that represent the diversity of the Latino culture, including story time where children are immersed in the world of Spanish stories, developing their imagination and language skills, and an introduction to reading and other activities that promote bilingual education. We know that being multilingual can improve the academic and social-emotional skills of children in addition to increasing job opportunities in the future and a greater awareness and appreciation of cultural diversities.
This Playgroup wants to model, encourage and inspire parents and caregivers to foster the Spanish language at home and support their children’s language development and cultural heritage. This space also wishes to offer conversations that fortify Spanish-speaking families taking in consideration the Protective Factors, respecting and recognizing the cultural and linguistic differences.
The transition process began a few months ago with ongoing meetings attended by Marcelina Mejia de Casillo (Playgroup Coordinator) , Erica Dominguez, (leader of the Loleta group), Heidi O’Hanen ( Associate Director, Child and Family Support) and Family Support Navigator Leticia Padilla, in which the First 5 team had the opportunity to listen and discuss the ideas and goals of the playgroup members and develop a transition plan, which includes announcing to English speaking families about the change, closing the playgroup for the month of July and planning for the reopening in August.
The Loleta Group team wants to clarify that all families are welcome but should be aware that the group and activities are conducted only in the Spanish language to achieve the goal of creating a Spanish-speaking space. The Group meets on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Loleta Community Church, located at 218 Church St., Loleta.
