Full Spectrum Indigenous Doula Training

October 09, 2023

In April 2023, Road to Resilience hosted a Full Spectrum Indigenous Doula Training facilitated by Zaagi’idiwin, an indigenous led and created curriculum by Melissa Brown and Candace Neumann. Road to Resilience partnered with the Better Birthing Project and United Indian Health Services Inc. to provide this training to our community to combat the health disparities and infant mortality rates our community faces. The attendees came from all over Humboldt and Del Norte counties, ranging from but not limited to Smith River over to Orleans and Hoopa to Coastal Humboldt and South, ensuring that this training and its impact reached as far and wide as possible. 30 participants, which include our Road to Resilience staff, attended this four-day training and became certified doulas who have the opportunity to provide this caring support and have the potential to receive payment through Medi-Cal if they choose. This feels like a huge accomplishment for our program, as it’s been a dream to host not just any doula training but a doula training specific for Native people and families. Our Road to Resilience staff have used this knowledge and education to increase the quality of care we are already providing to families, and we are very excited to see how this training continues to impact our community as whole.
