Play is far from frivolous—it is the foundational work of early childhood. Scientific research, including reports from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), consistently affirms that developmentally appropriate play is essential for healthy brain architecture. Through play, children develop critical executive function skills—such as planning, problem-solving, and emotional regulation—along with robust language, cognitive, and social-emotional abilities. These joyful, self-directed interactions are how children process new information, manage stress, and build the resilience they need to thrive in a complex world. For the 2025-2026 fiscal year, First 5 Humboldt will continue to ensure this crucial element of development remains accessible, funding 19 regional playgroups across the county. These groups typically meet one to two times a week for approximately two hours, offering consistent opportunities for engagement.
Our playgroups are intentionally designed to harness this powerful learning process for both children and the adults who care for them. While children gain essential skills through quality early learning experiences, caregivers receive crucial support that directly impacts family well-being. According to the 2023 Playgroup Family Survey (as cited in the FY 2023-2024 reports), 97% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the playgroup provides valuable overall support, and 90% felt more supported as a parent as a result of attending. This success aligns with longitudinal studies showing that persistent participation in supported playgroups acts as a protective factor against social isolation. By integrating dedicated time for essential play (which fuels healthy brain development) with the support of our Family Support Navigators who help families access key community resources like WIC and the Redwood Coast Regional Center, First 5 Humboldt is uniquely positioned to meet the concrete and social needs required to help families succeed.
