Tummy Time to Walking: Playgroup Retreat Equips Leaders to Support Infant Development

May 19, 2025

First 5 is committed to supporting the healthy development of young children by empowering those who work directly with families. A prime example is our upcoming Spring Playgroup Retreat, where we provide valuable resources and training to playgroup leaders, who are crucial in facilitating early learning and connection for families. This year’s retreat addresses the expressed need for more infant-focused space within these groups. These biannual retreats also offer a valuable opportunity for playgroup leaders to connect, fostering networking and collaboration that leads to growth and strengthens their professional skills.

This year, we’re honored to feature Trevor Carlson, a local pediatric physical therapist, the author of “Tummy Time to Walking: Building a Foundation for Lifelong Success with Infant Movement,” and the founder and operator of the local organization Therapy Kids (therapykids.org). Therapy Kids is an organization dedicated to helping as many families as possible in Humboldt and Del Norte counties who are in need of pediatric therapy services. Mr. Carlson will present to our playgroup leaders, and we’re providing each leader with a copy of his book, further enhancing their professional development.

Reflecting a local “baby boom,” we’ve observed increased need for baby-safe areas and infant-focused attention in our playgroups. Trevor’s expertise will provide timely and essential guidance to playgroup leaders in supporting our youngest participants.

“Tummy Time to Walking” offers practical guidance aligned with First 5’s mission, emphasizing:

  • Milestone Support: Guiding parents through each gross motor milestone.
  • Optimal Learning: Emphasizing the “Just Right Zone.”
  • Development Prioritization: Helping parents focus on key aspects of their child’s growth.
  • Tummy Time Importance: Explaining why tummy time is crucial and how to make it fun.
  • Application of Principles: Teaching how to apply movement principles to various areas of a child’s growth.

By equipping our playgroup leaders with this knowledge and fostering connection and learning, First 5 aims to empower them to create enriching, supportive environments for young children and their families. This retreat exemplifies our dedication to strengthening our community’s foundation for lifelong success, beginning in the earliest years, by investing in the ongoing professional development of those who directly serve our families.
